TOP-STOP® Concrete Surface Retarder for Exposed Aggregate Finishes

A$0.00

TOP-STOP® by W. R. Meadows is a spray-applied, water-soluble concrete surface retarder designed to temporarily delay the setting of the cement paste at the surface of freshly placed concrete.

This allows the underlying concrete to cure and harden normally while keeping the surface mortar soft enough to be removed at the appropriate time. Once washed away, the process reveals the natural stone and aggregate within the concrete, creating an attractive exposed aggregate finish.

What Is TOP-STOP® Used For?

TOP-STOP® is commonly used for decorative and architectural concrete applications where a controlled exposed aggregate or textured finish is required.

Exposed Aggregate Concrete

TOP-STOP® can be used to create attractive exposed aggregate finishes on:

  • Concrete driveways

  • Footpaths and sidewalks

  • Patios and entertaining areas

  • Pool surrounds

  • Architectural concrete

  • Decorative concrete surfaces

  • Precast and architectural wall panels

By controlling how deeply the surface cement paste is retarded, contractors can expose the desired amount of aggregate to achieve the required appearance and texture.

Construction Joints and Bonding Surfaces

TOP-STOP® can also be used to create a roughened concrete surface between pours. Removing the surface mortar exposes the aggregate and creates a mechanical profile that can help improve the bond between existing and subsequently placed concrete or toppings.

This can provide an alternative to more aggressive surface preparation methods such as sandblasting, chipping or acid etching.

Key Benefits of TOP-STOP®

Controlled Surface Exposure
The retarder allows the surface mortar to be removed to expose the aggregate beneath, helping achieve a consistent decorative finish.

Less Aggressive Surface Preparation
Instead of relying on heavy mechanical methods such as chipping or sandblasting, the treated surface can be cleaned and washed to remove the softened surface mortar.

Water-Soluble Formulation
TOP-STOP® is water-soluble and designed for spray application, making it practical for concrete contractors working across a range of applications.

Available in Different Etch Depths
Specialised TOP-STOP® products, including the TOP-STOP® CED range, provide options for controlled etch depths. Colour coding helps contractors identify the selected depth during application.

Suitable for Decorative Concrete
TOP-STOP® is particularly useful where the final appearance of the aggregate is an important part of the finished concrete design.

How Does TOP-STOP® Work?

TOP-STOP® is applied to the surface of freshly placed concrete after the concrete has been properly finished.

The product temporarily delays the setting of the cement paste at the surface while the concrete underneath continues to develop strength. At the appropriate time, the treated surface can be removed using water and suitable cleaning methods.

The result is an exposed aggregate concrete surface where the natural stone is visible and forms part of the finished appearance.

Important: Application rates, timing, removal methods and suitable TOP-STOP® grades should always be determined according to the manufacturer's current technical data and the specific concrete conditions.

TOP-STOP® for Decorative Concrete

For contractors and concrete professionals looking to achieve a high-quality exposed aggregate finish, a surface retarder such as TOP-STOP® can provide greater control over the finished surface while reducing the need for aggressive surface preparation.

For the best results, correct product selection, application and timing are essential.
